This rare flag belonged to the 9th Louisiana Partisan Rangers, originally formed on May 28, 1862, at Camp Moore as the 1st Louisiana Regiment, Partisan Rangers. The unit, made up of men from Louisiana’s Florida Parishes, was led by Lt. Col. James H. Wingfield. After early skirmishes along the Amite and Tchefuncte Rivers, the battalion was renamed and went on to fight in the Battle of Baton Rouge and the Siege of Port Hudson, where they notably clashed with the Louisiana Native Guards. The battalion surrendered on July 9, 1863. The flag is a Louisiana Secession variant, with a French tricolor canton, a single gold star, and gold fringe. It was captured by Lt. Col. Oliver Lull of the 8th New Hampshire Infantry between May 7–27, 1863. He was later killed in action during the assault on Port Hudson. This historic flag is now in the care of Confederate Memorial Hall, on loan from the Texas Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy.
