Tailwater Jig – Black/Olive

Catégorie :
Tailwater Jig – Black/Olive A darker euro-style midge with a black body, olive thorax, and the weight to hold bottom in heavier tailwater current. The Tailwater Jig – Black/Olive is our bigger take on the tailwater jig concept, tied in size 12 only for fishing heavier current, deeper runs, and situations where you need a true point fly to help anchor the rig. At its core, this style is basically a zebra midge built on a stronger euro-style jig hook with a slotted bead, but we wanted a version that fits how we fish tailwaters around here. We are big fans of larger midges when the water gets pushy, and this fly is meant to get down, hold its place, and help carry smaller droppers behind it. What makes this one stand out is the black body paired with an olive dubbing thorax. The black body gives it that darker zebra-midge look that works so well in tailwaters, while the olive thorax adds a buggy, natural-looking finish up front. It gives you a little different look than the standard peacock-style thorax without losing the simple, fishy profile that makes these flies so effective. I am a big believer in euro hooks for this kind of pattern because they are stronger, they ride hook-point-up better with a slotted bead, and they sink fast. That matters when you are trying to get a size 12 midge-style fly down in heavy White River current. These are game changers when you fish them the right way, especially as a point fly with droppers behind them. Key Features • Size 12 only for a bigger midge profile in heavier water• Strong euro-style jig hook• Slotted bead for faster sink rate and better hook-point-up riding angle• Black body for a darker zebra-midge style profile• Olive dubbing thorax for a buggy, natural-looking finish• Built to fish as a true point fly in deeper tailwater current When to Fish It • In heavy current when you need a true point fly• In deeper runs where smaller midges struggle to get down• Any time trout are eating bigger midge-style patterns• On the White River and other tailwaters where depth and sink rate matter• When you want a darker midge pattern with more size, strength, and weight How to Fish It • Fish it as your point fly with smaller droppers behind it• Keep it near the bottom where trout are feeding in current• Dead drift it through seams, slots, buckets, and deeper lanes• Let the slotted bead and jig hook help get the rig down• Use it when smaller midges are not enough to anchor the setup How to Rig It • Best fished as the point fly in a two-fly or three-fly setup• Pair it with lighter midges, soft hackles, caddis droppers, or small attractors• Fish it under an indicator or in a tight-line/euro setup depending on water type• Use the heavier jig-style build to help keep the rig down and moving clean near the bottom Why This Pattern Works This pattern works because it takes the proven zebra-midge idea and builds it into a stronger, heavier tailwater tool. The size 12 profile gives trout something bigger to notice in heavier water, while the black body gives it a darker, more defined midge look that works well in deeper current and pressured tailwater situations. The olive dubbing thorax adds just enough contrast and bug life without making the fly too flashy or overdone. Add in the slotted bead and euro-style jig hook, and you have a fly that sinks fast, rides clean, and works well as the anchor in a multi-fly setup. If you are a midge fisherman, a scud fisherman, or somebody who likes having a real point fly when the current gets pushy, the Tailwater Jig – Black/Olive is a very good addition to the box.
